traffic and the weekend is here, lawrence. soleil it on us. looking -- so lay it on us. looking good. no rain at this time. we have dense fog at the beaches this morning. but i think that's going to start to break up throughout the day. still looks like we'll see lots of sunshine into the afternoon. in fact, away from the coast temperatures warming up 70s inside the bay mid- to upper 80s in the valleys and 60s partly cloudy toward the beaches. out over the bay we have some patches of fog. the temperatures running a little bit cooler this morning. remember yesterday we had some very warm temperatures at this time. 50s and 60s now. but by the afternoon sunshine and 84 degrees in concord. 84 also in the napa valley. 80 in san jose. and 71 degrees in san francisco. all right. let's check the roads with elizabeth. thank you, lawrence. we have one accident and a little bit of overnight roadwork that's finally clearing. so we'll show you some travel times. highway 4 still looks good in both directions.

westbound 580 an accident approaching grand line is blocking up to two lanes, delays on 205 out of tracy sluggish to north flynn but it is "friday light" across the bay area so travel times are slightly down early in the morning. interstate 80 clear berkeley to emeryville. accident at grant line may slow you down not by much. 880 in oakland looks good. overnight roadwork is in the clearing stages. may still be a little sluggish southbound jackson to 16th. that is "kcbs traffic." back to you guys. >> all right. thank you, elizabeth. 5:01. apple fans going nuts over the new iphone 6. the device in stores later today. check out the lines for the phone. this is new york city camping out all night long. one of those folks probably playing hooky to work on their phones. the scene repeated throughout the country today. we'll have a live report on all

the iphone madness here in the bay area coming up in the next half-hour. the man accused of intentionally setting one of the largest fires burning in california right now is expected in court today. 37-year-old wayne huntsman was arrested yesterday. he is expected to be arraigned later this afternoon. kpix 5's anne makovec is live at the newsroom with more on huntsman and the fight to contain the king fire. >> reporter: that fire has now burned more than 76,000 acres. it grew by 5,000 acres just overnight. this morning, it is only 10% contained. more than 4,000 firefighters still in the front lines of the massive fire racing through rugged canyons in el dorado county. there's a huge plume of ominous smoke coming from this fire. it's the length of colorado. 12,000 homes are still threatened this morning. mandatory evacuations under way. shifting winds are pushing that fire in all directions prompting the closure along highway 50 from pollock pines

to riverton as the fire goes through dry trees and vegetation. >> the embers coming out of this fire the smoke columns are lofted and go over the unburned land and start fires. >> reporter: the man accused of starting the fire, 37-year-old wayne huntsman is in jail this morning. bail is $10 million. his sister is now speaking out. we are going to hear from her coming up in the next half- hour. michelle? >> anne, it sounds like the state is throwing a lot of resources at this fire. >> reporter: they say it's costing $5 million a day to fight the king fire. they are calling for help now from all over the country. firefighters are coming in from as far away as the east coast. live in the newsroom, anne makevoc, kpix 5. police in richmond suspect gang activity is behind the firing of more than 40 rounds of ammunition into an apartment building. the shots were fired just before 8:30 last night on bissell avenue. nobody was injured. investigators recovered some 44 bullet casings though from that

area. this happened in the iron triangle neighborhood where there has been an increase lately in gang-related crime. new this morning, investigators in florida say a man shot and killed his adult daughter and six of his grandchildren before killing himself. the gilchrist county sheriff's department says don spirit called 911 yesterday to say he might harm himself or others. when deputies arrived at the home, spirit killed himself and then the other bodies were discovered. the children killed were ages 3 months to 11 years. and today a judge will hear motions to dismiss a case against former santa clara county supervisor george shirakawa junior. he is accused of campaign fraud charges. prosecutors say his dna on an illegal campaign mailer proves he was trying to sabotage the san jose city council candidate back in 2010. shirakawa was convicted of gambling away public funds last year and sentenced to 7 months in jail. developing news, france announced today it's conducted its first air strikes in

northern iraq destroying a depot housed by "islamic state" militants. it killed dozens of isis fighters. this comes after yesterday's crucial vote on capitol hill. the u.s. senate approved a key part of president obama's strategy to eventually destroy isis. the plan involves equipping and training moderate syrian rebels. >> the strong bipartisan support in congress for this new training effort shows the world that americans are united in confronting the threat from isil. >> joint chiefs chairman martin dempsey says it could take a year before the rebels are trained and ready to return to the battlefield. the results are in and voters in scotland have rejected independence deciding to remain part of the united kingdom. alfonso van marsh reports from london as people of scotland move forward. reporter: campaigners who fought to stop scotland from breaking away from the united kingdom declared victory. >> we have chosen unity over

division and positive change rather than needless separation. >> reporter: a majority of scots voted to reject a referendum that would have ended the country's 307-year partnership with the united kingdom. scotland's first minister had hoped to lead his country to independence. >> i accept that verdict of the people. and i call on all of scotland to follow suit. >> reporter: now he must unite a country deeply divided by this two-year long independence campaign. the british prime minister says he will follow through with promises to transfer more political power to scotland. >> so now it is time for our united kingdom to come together and to move forward. >> reporter: cameron thanks voters for stand with the united kingdom. alfonso van marsh, cbs news, london. happening today in san pablo, a protest to stop the sale of doctors medical center to a casino. the hospital has been operating in the red for years now. it stopped accepting emergency

ambulances just last month. it reduced its in patient beds. hospital executives are moving forward with plans to sell. nurses, doctors and residents are expected to protest the sale today at 10:00. some students in the university of california system are having trouble getting mental health care. it's been a growing concern since the shooting spree near uc-santa barbara. the gunman wasn't a student. over the past years the number of students seeking help has increased 37%. critics are calling for more staffing and funding. time now 5:07. a massive search under way for an inmate who escaped. why a jury was reading the verdict in his case. after the break details on how he was able to get away. >> plus washington rolls out the red carpet for cbs' new hit drama. coming up, we catch up with some of the show's stars. >> low pressure still spinning off the coastline. what does that mean for the last weekend of summer? we'll talk about that coming up. >> and so far, so good on this

henderson fought with deputs in the courtroom -- then bo a minnesota inmate making a run for it as the jury was reading the guilty murder verdict. police still searching for him across the twin cities region. he robbed the bloomington sands club where he had worked and apparently tried to shoot two people. he bolted while the jury was reading the verdict. today is the big day. we have a look at an apple store in san francisco last night. people were lining up for the new iphone. lines were long across the country. the hype and the hoopla, they are high in silicon valley. kiet do joins us live from palo alto. >> reporter: good morning. it feels like the epicenter of it all because you know, the iphones are designed down the street here. we are live at the palo alto apple store. at last count about 10 minutes

ago there were 211 people in line ranging from people who just showed up to people who have been here since 1 p.m. on tuesday. they have their tents out. some of them are sleeping under blanket on top of newspapers and sleeping bags. a lot of lawn chairs out here. we'll see a lot of laptops, coolers, things like that. these people have been here for the long haul. speaking of the phone, 4.7" versus 5.5." that's the question, which one are you going to get, regular or plus? here's what some people had to say. >> i prefer the larger size. >> bigger is better. >> its bigger and faster. >> i think the iphone is too small. too small. >> reporter: all right. so in the past, they have opened up at the clock or 10:00. unsure of the opening now. we have seen some apple employees stationed all along this line here to do crowd control, greeting, to make sure things are going okay. so whatever it is when they

door, altamont pass and 680, it's slow before grant line but once you get past there, everything is clear all the way to the dublin interchange. roadwork approaching hacienda is long gone now. 880 roadwork also clear between oakland and san leandro. they have various lanes and directions blocked overnight. it's 15 minutes between 238 and the maze. the eastshore freeway also looks great so far. richmond into the berkeley area into emeryville. south bay travel times, northbound 101 a quick trip 14 minutes between 280 and 237. out the door with the forecast, here's lawrence. a lot of fog and low clouds on the coastline, dense fog and drizzle at the beaches but the rain is gone. a nice summer weekend ahead. low clouds and fog hugging the coastline. low pressure still spinning off the coast that same low that brought us showers yesterday but has weakened a lot. we don't have to worry about rain today but there's some

drizzle toward the beaches. by the afternoon, skies will be mostly sunny away from the coastline with some warmer temperatures and sunny and warm for the weekend. today we'll warm up away from the coastline. in fact getting hot in the central valley about 2 degrees in sacramento. 91 fresno. 76 degrees in lake tahoe. 71 into monterey bay. low clouds and fog going to hug the coast the better part of the day. we may see some cooler temperatures here out toward the beaches but inside the bay and the valleys these temperatures running warmer. these in afternoon 70s and 80s. 77 fremont. east bay temperatures mid- to upper 80s. 60s inside70s inside the bay, 60s at the beaches. 90s inland and cooling down monday and tuesday. and get a load of this, this is unusual, another storm system

workers trained in science, technology and engineering or math the so-called stem jobs should be well positioned in this high-tech economy. stem jobs may not be for everyone but you don't have to be an engineer or math major. a brookings study found that more than half of all stem jobs require some training but not a four-year college degree. those skills are needed across a va it reof blue collar or technical jobs in manufacturing, healthcare and construction. in the bay area, stem jobs account for almost 24% of all positions. and on average, stem jobs requiring an associate's degree or less pay more than $73,000 a year. that's a big jump over the average non-stem job. workers wedcasion and skills in any of -- with education and skills in any of those fields should be in demand. that demand will grow in the coming years. steven greenberg, kpix 5. ,, ,,,,,,

>> and it's a big friday. hi, everyone. i'm frank mallicoat. it is nearly 5:30. >> it is a big friday because of apple. this is a look at an apple store in san francisco. folks are just waiting in line for the cupertino company's new iphone model. lines across the country are long as iphone groupies want to be the first to get the 6. as you can imagine, the hype is pretty high in silicon valley. kpix 5's keit do joins us live from palo alto. you have a lot of people standing behind you. >> reporter: at last count we counted at the top of the hour we had more than 200 people standing in line out here. in fact, i just spoke with the guy at the front of the line, he's been here since 1 p.m. on tuesday. he is delirious. he is tired. but he is excited and he says that by staying out here, you get a sense of accomplishment and enjoy the phone a little

[ laughter ] around the bay area today we have some sunshine coming our way but starting out with some thick fog this morning even a little drizzle out along the coastline. but we're done with the rain for now. looks like high pressure is going to be taking over for this weekend and the sunshine going to return. in fact, we're looking at mid- to upper 80s inland today. 70s inside the bay. couple of low 80s too and 60s partly cloudy out along the coast. patchy fog out over the bay not as warm to start out the day this morning. these temperatures still very mild. 50s and mid-60s into san jose. latter half of the day here comes the sunshine and 84 in concord, 8 had in the napa valley. -- 84 in the napa valley. 69 pacifica. let's check the roads with elizabeth. thank you, lawrence. that accident at grant line is now clear all lanes are now back open. it was westbound 580 approaching grant line road. it's still very slow out of tracy though coming on 205. the good news, once you get past that earlier accident

scene everything is good into pleasanton. it is "friday light." and we also have a new issue by the way westbound 237 by zanker road. that's a -- the accident is on the right-hand shoulder. 880 is a little sluggish. southbound 880 near 980 and 101 looks pretty good along the peninsula. westbound 580 altamont pass and 680 starting to slow a bit. you can see the drive time is up to 20 minutes across that stretch. that is "kcbs" drive to work. back to you guys. >> all right. thank you, elizabeth. so far the king fire burning in el dorado county seems unstoppable. it has burned 76,000 acres more than 111 square miles. smoke is even visible from outer space. fire is only 10% contained. >> anne makovec is live in the newsroom with more on a rapidly growing fire and the man accused of igniting it. anne. >> reporter: that man is charged with arson. he is expected in court today. 37-year-old wayne allen

huntsman is being held on $10 million bail. >> i don't believe he is guilty of it. and i'm in complete shock. >> reporter: huntsman's sister lives in salinas and says her brother has done tree work most of his life and grew up camping in the wilderness. >> he is a hard worker, always working to make ends meet to do what he has to do to provide even if we would have a bonfire like at the beach or something he would be the one watching making sure everything was okay. >> reporter: the king fire grew 5,000 acres overnight but that pales in comparison to the 40,000-acre explosion wednesday night. cooler temperatures helped limit the spread. >> it's nice that we can get to sleep easier, but we worry about our friends. >> reporter: 12,000 homes are still threatened. the fire has been most active to the northeast burning through tinder dry vegetation and trees near the tahoe national forest. firefighters are still battling flare-ups near highway 50 which is closed from pollock pines to riverton. >> you can see it from the freeway normally as you drive by. >> reporter: she has no idea if

her log cabin is still standing. >> we are resigned to the fact. how do you -- what else can you do? >> reporter: there are 4,000 firefighters right now on the front lines. this fire is costing the state $5 million a day. frank? >> anne, tell us, what do we know about the arson suspect's criminal history? >> reporter: his record actually dates back to 1996 when he was convicted of grand theft and assault with a deadly weapon. he even spent time in san quentin state prison. and in this case, it's not just simple arson charges he is facing. he faces a special allegation of arson with aggravating factors for putting firefighters in danger which should put him away for a much longer time if convicted. anne makovec, kpix 5. 49ers ray mcdonald was arrested for allegedly abusing his fiancee last month. now we're learning police were called out to his home back in may. the san jose police report does not mention any names but it says there was an argument between an engaged couple and that's when the woman grabbed a handgun and held it at her

side. when the man threatened to call 911, the woman fled. experts say this incident works in mcdonald's favor. the 49ers have allowed him to play pending the outcome of the investigation. san jose police trying to find out who shot out a window at a fire station in the city's edenvale area. it happened yesterday. someone used a pellet or bb gun. the fire station didn't have surveillance cameras so investigators are checking nearby businesses to see if there are any cameras that might have caught something. questionable tweets from an east bay high school teacher ro not criminal. newark memorial high school teacher krista hodges aired her frustrations with her students out on twitter a few months ago. hodges tweeted she wanted to stab some kids and with two -- wished two students would get hit by a car. police say, although inappropriate, they are not criminal threats. hodges was reprimanded from the school district, but not fired. some developing news. france announced today it's conducted its first air strike

us all things business on your favorite day of the week. good morning. >> reporter: yeah, good morning. happy friday, frank and michelle. there is a lot of excitement here at the new york stock exchange today. investors are getting ready for what could be the biggest ipo in history. the chinese e-commerce site alibaba will start trading this morning under the ticker baba priced at $68 a share valuing the company at more than $167 billion. this company is huge. the online sales totaled $248 billion last year. that is more than amazon and ebay combined. stocks opened the day in record territory. the s&p closed at a new all- time high yesterday as well as the dow which finished up 109. the nasdaq also added 31. home depot says its data breach at its stores between april and september put 56 million debit and credit cards at risk. the nation's largest home

everybody else. >> reporter: get ready for the partial closure of the closure for westbound drivers on the bay bridge into san francisco. >> it's not something i really am looking forward to. >> reporter: the ramp is a major route for commuters heading to the financial district. but only one side, the right side of the ramp that veers to folsom street, will close. the left side of the ramp to fremont street will stay open and will be the main alternate. or drivers can use the harrison street off-ramp instead. >> we think that there will be a lot of safety improvements in the area. it will lead to new sidewalks, a new traffic signal. >> reporter: this rendering shows the new and improved t- shaped design of the future ramp. it's a master plan to make the south of market neighborhood more pedestrian friendly once the new transbay transit center moves in as well as stores and housing. >> we realize that this is taking place at a time when there is a lot of activity, a lot of traffic rerouted in the area. but we're confident that

let's go over to lawrence now to get a check of your forecast. liz, yeah. looking good this weekend. in fact, today we're starting out with some patchy fog. we have a little drizzle at the coastline, the fog thick in some of the north bay valleys as well but looks like we are in for a great day ahead. it looks like high pressure going to sneak in for the weekend. we'll see more sunshine into the afternoon and temperatures are going to be warming up away from the coastline. in fact, the temperatures a whole lot warmer especially throughout the weekend, maybe back into the 90s in some of the valleys. low pressure still spinning off the coast. this is the same low that brought the showers yesterday but it's significantly weakened this morning. as it does it's filling in so we are going to see patchy fog outside and some warmer weather on the way. higher temperatures in the central valley about 92 in sacramento. 91 fresno. partly cloudy 71 into monterey bay and 70 degrees in eureka. low clouds and fog kind of hugging the coastline today. so it may be cooler right toward the beaches but you get away from the coast, you're going to see warmer temperatures in the bay and the valleys. then other than patchy fog in the morning hours over the
